In fact, a majority of countries quench did not spread similarly far past their hold borders and the people in those countries did the same. The biggest connections between countries, mainly the European countries, were a chain of alliances. This chain would prove to be the starting drive for the biggest event to shake the Earth at the time and the eradicate result would begin a great linking of all countries on the planet. This event is World War I, and it would claim over 40 million casualties and another 20 million dead, military and civilian alike. It all began on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, an ancient city in the Balkan. A nationalist organization known as the disconsolate slide by assassinated the archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir to Austria-Hungarys throne. The Black Hand was organized in Serbia, and even though they most plausibly had nothing at all to do with the assassination, became the target of Austria-Hungarys revenge.

This is where the chain of alliances turned what would be a simple warfare between two countries into a conflict that was destined to center all of Europe in its fires. Serbia had an alliance with Russia, who came to the aid of their small ally. In turn, Germany came to the support of Austria-Hungary. The main enemy of Germany, France was drawn in as well. England, who was also in an alliance with France and Russia, hesitated to enter the fray. However, they too were forced to uphold alliance laws when Germany used the neutral commonwealth Belgium to make their way into France. Because of one man, Gavrilo Princip of the Black Hand, the entire European continent became lit with the fires of war. Princips deeds became known as the shot hear around the world.
