Leo Tolstoy starts off his book Anna K arenina with the nomenclature All happy families are alike; each uncheerful family is unhappy in its own way. American Beauty is a film that explores this concept. All the families in here are dysfunctional and decaying as Lester Burnham navigates his way through his mid deportment crisis.
American Beauty was released in 1999 and directed by Sam Mendes. In my opinion the spirit of the movie is decent. The actors and actresses are solid especially Kevin Spacey who plays Lester Burnham absolutely balances the absurd actions of his character with the knowledge that yes he is rebelling against his own life but hes okay with it. The issue I have with the movie is that the only character that is fully demonstrable and aware is Lester Burnham the rest are caricatures of stereotypes. Carolyn is the shallow perfect housewife, the missy is the stereotypical teenager and Colonel Fitz who hates gays. Colonel Fitz for example is a man who requires urine from his son for drug testing, has a piece of nazi china in his cabinet and is homophobic in public. Ironically ample the gay family is the only one in the video that isnt obviously dysfunctional.
Lester Burnham on the other hand wakes from the delusions of the middle social class life and angers everyone by telling the truth no press how brutal it is. I think that older people whitethorn enjoy this movie more as they could likely get a line with the main characters mid life crisis.
Lester and Carolyn Burnham continue in a perfect house, perfect neighborhood confidential information an upper middle class lifestyle. However both are experiencing midlife crises where Lester starts working out more and idolizes his daughters friend. meanwhile Carolyn starts an affair with her rival.
