God of warfare - Leon Adams:
Thoughts on the Italian Invasion of Ethopia. 1935
This poem is mainly about War and the problems that follow around it. The poets opening line reffers to Mars, the Roman God of War and how he has broken the bond of Peace betwixt two countries yet again. As sparrows combat oer a va chamberpott crumb; To wash the verdant earth with sickening daub What the poet did in these Lines is compare sparrows to the different Nations in a war and the bread crumbs are obviously the spoils of victory. The sickening blood is the pain and destruction that comes from the fight. The Scars that dont heal.
The future? Famine! Poverty! and Strife! These all present Ethiopia in todays day and age.
Therefore this poem can be seen to have some predictive quality in a sense. The poet also says that countries only go to war so that they can fill their pockets with dishonest loot. Which is stealing in other words. The Last line is the darkest and most grim, God Sighs. animateness Goes On. Which means that war even upsets God but he doesnt do anything about it and instead just has life go bad on.
