Walt Whitman

On May 31, 1819 an American poet, essayist and journa heel, Walt Whitman, was born. subsequently increase up in Brooklyn, Whitman worked as a Journalist, teacher, government salesclerk and even a volunteer nurse. Walt was the second of nine children. Walts formal schooling ended at age xi when he went to work as an office boy for deuce lawyers. He eventually became an apprentice for the weekly Long Island newsa report card, the Patriot. later on, Walt also worked for the printer Erastus Worthington in Brooklyn, N.Y. After that he took a job at the weekly newspaper, Long-Island Star. While there he anonymously published some of hi earliest poetry. Until 1838 he was a teacher at various schools in the area. After his teaching his attemps Walt founded his own newspaper, the Long Islander. He sold the paper after ten months and made another attempt at teaching. Walt eventually moved to NY City where he worked for various newspapers.

Whitman began report what would become Leaves of Grass as early as 1850. He would continue to edit the collection of poetry until his death. Walt paid for the starting signal publication of the collection of poetry himself. at long last it was picked up by a publisher and the second edition was almost not printed due to potentially offensive sexual themes. On December 16, 196 Walt saw a list of fallen soldiers and he saw his brothers flesh on the list and traveled south to find him. He did find his brother alive yet was so alter by all the wounded soldiers he saw during the fight that he volunteered as a nurse in the troops hosptials. He wrote several articles about the war.

Whitman was not a drinker. He sometimes argued for prohibition. He found jobs working for the state but was eventually fired from his job as clerk with the sureness of Indian Affairs.
